Sam’s Approach to New Students
The work always starts with learning the basic functions of the guitar: tuning, knobs, the different functions, how to use an amp, and the basic maintenance of a guitar.
From there we delve into the blues. Blues is the easiest and most repeated form of music in America. Because the Blues scale is so easy, it allows you to practice improvisation and composition. You can make your own music, which is inspiring. Once you learn the six note Blues scale, you can improvise and compose, playing over changes and melody, and manipulating harmony. You won’t believe how much you can really do, based on three basic chords.
Then it gets personalized. Every branch of American music (Metal, Rock, Funk, Jazz, Zydeco, Country) comes from that basic trunk of American Blues. The chords figure into everything American because it all stems from the Blues.
A Typical Lesson?
Depending on where the student is, the lesson may focus on technique, harmony, thinking modally, etc. Lessons can also include composition and a wide variety of techniques. Sam works with each student to develop goals together and take it from there.
